In order to promote the development of other applications that use the Layers infrastructure we plan to organize a Hackathon in Tallinn between the 19th and the 23rd of January 2015. This Hackathon will involve designers and developers from different partners as well as students from TLU and other European universities related to the project.
The goals of the Hackathon are the following ones:
– Promote the development of applications that use the Layers technical infrastructure.
– Create an opportunity for international undergraduate and graduate students to learn by collaborating with an international team to develop open software in a real-life scenario. The students will get support from the project if they want to further develop, or even commercialize, the applications developed during the Hackathon.
– Create an environment where students, researchers and companies will experiment with cutting edge technology that has been developed in the Learning Layers Project. The developers of Layers infrastructure will attend to the Hackathon and will provide all the support needed.
The Hackathon will last five days. Firstly we plan to present the project overview as well as a tutorial about how to use the Layers infrastructure. Then, the participants will form groups of two to five members and will select a topic they would like to work about and they will try to create a working prototype in five days. After the Hackathon the participants will be able to further develop or commercialize their prototypes. Further, as the Layers infrastructure has an open license the participants can freely use it in future projects in their companies.
