WP2 – Networked Scaffolding – Interacting with People

The overall objective of WP2 is one of designing solutions for scaffolding learning in networks; specifically this means developing designs and technologies (tools) to scaffold help seeking (learning) in a networked enterprise context. The scaffolds will provide a temporary structure for capturing individual and collaborative interactions and reflections in the context of just-in time up- / re-skilling work practice knowledge as used in the workplace. This will allow meaningful learning opportunities to emerge and to be used by individual for choosing relevant learning materials and people to talk to; it will also to be used in work context decision-making.
The Q&A approach adopted in this WP lowers barriers to getting involved as it mirrors natural learning practices of asking questions and providing answers in a workplace context. The Networked Scaffolding layer is embedded in the current working practice of an individual yet persistent over multiple work/organisational contexts, thus transcending practice.
Also, the Networked Scaffolding layer will create as an output resolved questions workers ask about a concept or problem in a particular context and thus contribute to the building of, for example, a Q&A recommendations/solutions database that has been validated. This will be realized with technology from T5.4 and draw on the research on quality indicators (T3.3).

Example questions to be addressed in a context of Networked Scaffolding layer are:

  • Which meanings or context should I select from available resources?
  • Which resources or people have proven to be effective for me?
  • Is there a wider network of people that I could draw on to help me?
  • How does my context constrain what I need and could/should use?
  • Which functionalities will be developed?
  • How can captured negotiations of meaning through networked scaffolding enable me to assess the effectiveness of learning resources from one context to another context; and how can this fosters cross-organisational learning and learning attitudes?
  • Each objective will include the need to develop tools and archetypical models. Archetypical models are lightweight seeds used to guide scaffolding; they act as reusable aides to interactivity / Q&A / problem solving contexts. They would be derived through co-design workshops with user groups and will include some very simple modelling of (a) the domain, (b) the tasks/work processes, (b) educational objectives and processes, (d) possibly a few more aspects to be confirmed.

The specific objectives of the work package are:

  • O2.1 Creating meaningful contextualised learning / problem-task understanding. Structured interactions so as the aide to clear understanding / negotiation of meaning of problem solving contexts. What is it that the user is asking for? Is a lightweight model of the learner required?
  • O2.2 Creating solutions for ubiquitous help seeking interactions / collaborative Q&A. Answers and solutions will emerge from negotiation with peers and other layers/services in the network. The learning will involve recommendations or guidelines enabling the learner to choose between people, learning materials or physical object opportunities; in this way scaffolding involves the making of decisions about which resources or people are meaningful to be used in a specific work context.
  • O2.3 Developing an understanding of large-scale networked scaffolding. This will involve consideration of scaffolded participation of users in such contexts as Social Network(ed) Sites, i.e. on a very large scale in terms of user involvement and interactivity.
