The main objective of WP5 will be to develop a Social Semantic Network that will enable situated and contextualized learning. The Social Semantic Network Layer will be based on the Social Semantic Server that will be integrated into the project infrastructure (WP6). A lightweight approach will be taken to build the Social Semantic Network: Semantic relations between actors, artefacts, topics etc. will be established either directly by the users through explicit annotation (WP ?), or indirectly through usage. The Social Semantic Network will build the technical basis for various intelligent services to be developed in the context of WP5 that support the users (i) when entering materials to the system, (ii) when gardening the structure, (iii) when further improving (“maturing”) resources, as well as (iv) in learning situations (through scaffolding). The social semantic network thus builds the basis for social negotiation to create a common understanding of semantic meaning (e.g., through gardening the structure).
Specific objectives of the workpackage:
- O5.1 Creating an infrastructure that allows for social negotiation of semantic meaning This part of the work package aims at providing the infrastructure for representing complex semantic relations between digital artefacts, users and physical objects. The semantic structure is populated through both, explicit annotation of users and analysis of system usage.
- O5.2 Enabling meaningful learning This objective focuses on mechanisms supporting the development of emerging semantic structures. Aggregated services process information from semantic models to infer models of the user and the used resources. Based on these models meaningful recommendations can be made in order to support the scaffolding process.
